Artesia is a city in Eddy County, NM with a population of 12,356 and a total area of 9.9 square miles. It is located roughly four miles west of the Pecos River and centered around the intersection of two major highways: U.S. Routes 82 and 285. Living in Artesia offers residents a supportive small-town community and plenty of job opportunities at the region’s oilfields, which along with its dairy and agriculture industries, drive the local economy. Artesia is nicknamed “City of Champions” and was once a candidate for the ESPN feature “Titletown USA.” It ranks highly on lists of “Places with the Best Public Schools in New Mexico” and “Best Places to Buy a House in New Mexico,” making it a great choice for settling down and raising a family.
The city gets its name from the discovery of an artesian aquifer below the area in 1903. This refers to an underground space that contains water under pressure. Local heavy equipment rental company Somers & Watson Machinery can help you dig underground to lay pipelines or complete a variety of other construction projects in the Artesia area.
